Throughline

Leadership coaching for film production

A crew of near-strangers becomes a team in days. Throughline helps it stay one.

I work with directors, producers, department heads, and cast to build trust fast, keep communication clear when the schedule breaks, and address friction before it costs a day.

Why it matters

Every production builds a company from scratch, then takes it apart.

A film asks a few dozen people who may never have met to perform under relentless pressure, then sends them home weeks later. The budget, the schedule, and the gear all have someone looking after them. How the team itself is working usually doesn’t — until it shows up as a lost day, a strained department, or a set nobody wants to come back to.

That’s the part of filmmaking I care about most.

How it works

Shaped to the production, from prep through post.

Prep

Time with the director, producers, and department heads to agree how decisions get made, how problems get raised, and what a good day looks like.

The shoot

Present, low-key, and useful. Support for the people carrying the most weight, and an early read on friction while it’s still small.

Wrap & post

A short debrief of what worked, so the next picture starts ahead — and support for the smaller team carrying the film home.

It can be a few prep sessions, a block of shoot days, or the whole run.

What it isn’t: I don’t evaluate or report on anyone. It isn’t therapy and it isn’t HR. I watch how the whole team is working and help its leaders see it clearly and respond well.

About Rand

Rand Harper

I’m a leadership coach with a master’s in systems psychology and roots in New York independent film. I’ve spent years working with senior teams at Fortune 500 and global companies such as L’Oréal, John Deere, and Hyundai.

On GABLE, the feature about wrestler Dan Gable, I’ve been inside the production from prep through the shoot and now into post. Throughline is what I’m building from that experience: bringing the work I’ve done with leadership teams to the people who make films.

Let’s talk.

If you’re in prep, about to shoot, or in post, a short call is the easiest way to see whether this fits. No pitch — I’d like to hear what you’re making.

Know someone heading into a production? Pass this page along. A word from someone who knows you carries more weight than anything I can say about myself.
